The Missouri Beef Quality Assurance Program (MO-BQA) was created to improve the quality needs of farmers, feeders and consumers. The Missouri Beef Quality Assurance Program was designed to help farmers set standards, create and store data and learn about the issues facing the cattle industry. The three types of fescue grown in Missouri are "endophyte-free," "Kentucky 31" and "novel." Kentucky 31 represents nearly all of the tall fescue growing in pastures in Missouri. The best grass available for pasture and hay production is tall fescue. And the best type of fuecue is "novel". It is infected with a "novel endophyte," a fungus that makes the plant drought and insect resistant. MaxQ is one brand name of this type fescue. It is highly nutritious. To change from Kentucky 31 to MaxQ fescue, you need to "Spray-Smother-Spray." Contact your local MU Extension for more information.
